Bryan, our senior Director of Marketing, happens to be an alumnus of the University of Texas, not to mention one of the more dedicated sports fans I know. I’m talking about the kind of fan that wakes up in the wee hours of the morning to get in on the pre-game chatter, then sacrifices his voice to the game by cheering throughout the entire four quarters. That is why he couldn’t bring himself to write this post, saying, “I don’t think I’m emotionally ready, yet.” So, since I don’t need any arm twisting when it comes to convincing me to write, I happily obliged, sat down at my keyboard (or as I like to call it, my Internet pen), and that, my friends, is how the following post was born…
Last Saturday, Texas Tech surprised many fans with a 39-33 come-from-behind win over Texas, which knocked the Longhorns off their throne to a #4 seed in the BCS standings. The game was intense, but the victory is no longer the interesting news… The numbers are. According to ESPN, the game drew ratings that translate to an average 8,590,000 households, making it the most-viewed ABC Saturday night game since USC beat Notre Dame 44-24 back in November of 2006.
Not surprisingly, those numbers were also reflected online. This week, FanSection’s Texas Tech football community overcame the long-standing Big 12 Fan Rankings leader (points are based on recruiting fellow fans to join a virtual “wave”) Ohio State by 125,760 points, or 6,288 waves joined. However, this kind of interaction is just one of the many ways that FanSection has made it easy for fans to express themselves. Between sending waves and Smack Talk to friends, as well as the endless trivia levels, every die hard fan out there has a way to articulate their enthusiasm for their favorite teams on FanSection’s sports applications.
