I’ve been to more sporting events than I can count on all my fingers and toes. NHL? Check. MLB and NFL? Check and check. MLS? Check (it was a San Jose Clash game, but it still counts). College football, basketball, baseball, and water polo? Check. Fencing, equestrian horse vaulting, racquetball and every other obscure sport short of unicycle hockey and extreme ironing? I’m actually not exaggerating here… Check.
Notice anything big missing? You got it: NBA. Before last Friday’s Warriors game against the Grizz, I had never been to a professional basketball game. So how did I prepare for this huge notch on my sporting events bedpost? FanSection’s Golden State Warriors Fans, of course! The following is a schedule of how I geared up, and what I believe is the best way to go into a game, then come out if it having had the most fun and the best knowledge:
Before the game. As many working folks do, I have so much – I’ll say “stuff” to keep this blog post PG-13 – in my head, that I can’t remember the time of the game. I go to the Schedule module on the homepage, and figure out that it’s at 7:30 p.m. Then it’s on to the Discussion board to get up-to-date details on the team happenings. Al Harrington is rumored to be traded. Another FanSection Warriors fan is going to be sitting in Section 118. Monta Ellis is still suspended for his little moped incident, and it’s looking like he won’t be active on the court anytime soon. Okay, bad news for the team, but there is no time to dwell on that because the crap talker in me has just found its way to Game Day Central. As an admin, I try to stay neutral by not posting anything, but I do throw a small smattering of tomatoes at Grizzlies fans and give a few hi-fives to my fellow Warriors fans. I’m about ready for the game now, but to seal the deal, I pick the Warriors to win in FanSection’s Prediction Game (those of you who watched the game know it was a bad choice… Ah well).
During the game. Say what you will, but my phone doesn’t have Internet access as an available feature, so instead of being online, I sit and watch the game from my awesome sixteenth row seat!
After the game. The first place I have to go is the Trivia section. I just went to my first NBA game, which practically makes me an expert! The first question: Which team did the Warriors stun by defeating in the 1st round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs? Umm, the Phoenix Suns? Okay okay, so maybe I’m not an authority, yet, but one more game should do it…
