Is Boston really the greatest sports city in the US?

Bostonians have long been considered some of the most passionate sports fans around, especially as it pertains to their professional teams. Of course, if your college championship dreams relied solely on the performance of Boston College, you can see why most fans in New England tend to navigate to pro sports. Whatever the case, I recently saw in Sporting News that Boston was named the best sports city in the US and decided to see if FanSection applications corroborate that lofty ranking. For a city that has hosted six championship parades since 2002 led by the New England Patriots with three, the Boston Red Sox with two, and the Boston Celtics with one, it should come as no surprise that Boston fans are dominating FanSection applications just as their teams are dominating professional sports. Here are the current user numbers along with their respective rankings within FanSection sports applications:
- New England Patriots - 351K, #1 in football
- Boston Celtics - 176K, #1 in basketball
- Boston Red Sox - 280K, #1 in baseball
- Bostin Bruins - 52K, #11 in hockey
So other than the Bruins which have to be considered the red-headed stepchild of the Boston sports scene at this point, Boston fans have embraced their teams on social networks every bit as much as they embrace them in the real world. I guess some would say that always comes with winning and that could be the case with the Patriots, but the Red Sox and Celtics fans I know would support their team in a sub-.500 season just as much as they would in a championship season. Well maybe not quite as much, but the point is that the title of “Greatest Sports City” is probably a well deserved one given recent history. So congrats Boston fans, and thanks for supporting your team with FanSection applications.
