This isn’t terribly relevant to what we do here at Watercooler, or within the FanSection community, but I just couldn’t pass it up. I just saw over at the Eye on Sports Media blog that David “The Hoff” Hasselhoff will be singing the National Anthem at the 2008 Las Vegas Bowl this Saturday. I guess Wayne Newton and Heidi Montag were busy. As the post points out, this could be a sign that college bowl games have jumped the tank. We now have 34 bowl games hosting 68 teams, which means that over half of FBS sub-division teams (formerly Division 1) are playing in a bowl game this holiday season. That means a lot of not-very-good teams playing in a lot of not-very-good games watched by not-very-many people. I’m not saying the Las Vegas Bowl is one of those, but given the economic times I guess you can’t blame organizers for trotting out the Hoff to get a little extra pub. The game itself pits a 12-2 BYU Cougars team against a 7-5 Arizona Wildcats team and could be a pretty good game. Arizona is finally back in bowl play after a very long hiatus, however, the Mountain West was 6-1 versus the Pac 10 this year so that may not bode well for the Wildcats. No word on whether the Hoff’s latest CD will be included in player gift bags.
