It’s that time of year again. The NFL season has come to a conclusion which officially marks the the end of football for 2008-2009. It was a great year for the NFL which saw a surprising Super Bowl participant in the Arizona Cardinals and a record sixth Super Bowl Championship by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But there were some other interesting story lines as well. Here are just a few that caught my attention during the season:
1. The Detroit Lions become the first team to go 0-16. Yikes.
2. The Dallas Cowboys implode. As a Cowboys fan, this was especially painful to watch.
3. The resurgence of the Miami Dolphins. It wasn’t long ago that the Fins nabbed one solitary game. This year they made the playoffs.
4. Matt Ryan wins Rookie of the Year. Rookie QBs often struggle, but Ryan led the Atlanta Falcons to a playoff birth.
5. Matt Cassle leads the New England Patriots. Cassle had not started a game since high school and had a stellar season with the Patriots after Brady went down.
The 2008-2009 season was also a fantastic year for us here at Watercooler as the FanSection football applications saw huge growth across the board. Below are just a few of the nuggets of data from this season:
- 2 million new registered users - 85% growth since August 1, 2008
- #1 community - Pittsburgh Steelers overtook the Patriots with 487,513 users
- #1 growth community - Pittsburgh Steelers with 309,032 new users - 173% growth
- #1 growth community (percentage) - Arizona Cardinals with growth of 3498%
- 15,390 total photos uploaded
- 186,414 total instances of smack talk given
- 104,309 total discussion and wall posts
- 11,234 total new trivia questions added
While the Steelers and Cardinals applications led the way towards the end of the year, they’re just two of the ten team applications that doubled in size over the course of the season. Others are Tennessee, Baltimore, Carolina, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York Jets, Miami, and San Diego. We look forward to seeing how these apps continue to grow in the off-season.
